Meet the Team

  • Founder

Valorie Kondos Field, aka Miss Val, as she’s affectionately known by the scores of champion gymnasts she’s coached over her career—has no background in gymnastics. She never tumbled, flipped, or played any type of organized sport. And yet she became a legendary, hall of fame coach, through curiosity, creativity, attention to detail, and unwavering care for the overall well-being of her athletes.

Head coach of the seven-time NCAA Champion, 22-time Regional and 18-time Pac-12 Champion UCLA Women’s Gymnastics team, Miss Val was inducted into the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. The four-time “National Coach of the Year” was recently named “West Region Coach” of the Year, Pac-12 Coach of the Year, and “Coach of the Century” for her solid track record as a preeminent coach.

Crediting her mentor, legendary basketball coach John Wooden, and the Olympians and athletes with whom she’s worked, Miss Val’s success is due to her extraordinary leadership and mentorship of young student-athletes, and the way in which she uses gymnastics as an avenue through which to teach valuable life lessons.

In her book, LIFE IS SHORT, DON’T WAIT TO DANCE, Miss Val shares personal stories, anecdotes and lessons learned throughout the 37-year career of a dancer/choreographer turned athletic coach. She shares stories about the Olympians and athletes with whom she’s worked, explains how her diagnosis with breast cancer actually turned into one of the best years of her life, and expounds on how she shaped her UCLA Gymnastics program as a life skills class. For Miss Val, it’s not about winning and losing, it’s about choreographing your life< and owning the choices you make.

Miss Val is a dynamic speaker and choreographer. She lights up a crowd with her enthusiasm and zest for life, and mesmerizes audiences with her spectacular ability to entertain. And, as a newly retired head coach, she’s ready to spread her joy even further.

  • Professional choreographer and dancer BJ Das begins her fourth season on UCLA's coaching staff and first as a full-time assistant coach after serving as the volunteer assistant coach from 2020-22.

Each year as the Bruins' choreographer, Das created floor exercise routines that went viral, including two routines from Nia Dennis that each amassed over 11 million views just on Twitter alone. Das also put together two routines that won Pac-12 floor exercise championships (Chae Campbell and Pauline Tratz in 2021) and three routines that scored perfect 10s (Gracie Kramer in 2020, Campbell twice in 2022 and Jordan Chiles twice in 2022). UCLA's floor exercise squad ranked first in the nation at the conclusion of the 2020 season, and their team score of 49.8, set Feb. 23, was the nation’s highest event score on any apparatus all season. In addition to her volunteer coaching role, Das assisted the Bruins in marketing and fundraising efforts and culture and team building. She also directed the Bruin Gymnastics Academy recreational program and summer camps.

As a professional dancer, Das has performed live with Beyonce, P!nk and Usher and toured with Avril Lavigne. Her music video credits include Beyonce’s “Run the World (Girls)”, Ariana Grande’s “Baby I” and Justin Bieber/Nicki Minaj’s “Beauty and a Beat”. Das has also performed live at the 2019 Grammy Awards, the 2018 American Music Awards and on the Ellen Show, The Voice and Late Show with James Corden, among others. Additionally, Das has choreographed for TV shows GLOW, Fresh Off the Boat and The Masked Singer, along with the Emmy Awards and Radio Disney Music Awards. She also served as an assistant choreographer for the Gold Over America Tour in 2021. Her first Hollywood experience was as a gymnast on the movie Stick It. Das has been signed to Bloc Talent Agency as a dancer and choreographer since 2007.

Das was the volunteer assistant coach and choreographer at the University of Utah in 2019, when the Utes ranked in the Top 5 in the nation on floor exercise.

A 2006 graduate of the University of Washington, Das earned her Bachelor’s degree in psychology. She competed on the Husky gymnastics team for two years.
